Music Keyboard Midi

Producing Your Beats And Music Using Midi
MIDI – short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface – is a computer language that allows you to use one device (computer, drum machine, keyboard) to control another (usually in this case a software program). The most powerful thing about MIDI is how universal it is – most electronic keyboards, drum machines and nearly all music software used today has a MIDI interface that gives you the opportunity to connect it to something else.
How does this come into play for making beats? Let’s say you’ve got a software program with banks of sounds in it – drums, piano, even strings. You Can use your keyboard (or another control device) to play notes that will correspond to those sounds. This means that you can play an unlimited number of different sounds all by controlling one device – use an old drum machine to play a keyboard solo, or lay down a great beat with just one hand on your keyboard.
It gets better: most software allows you to record and save the MIDI passages that you play. Not only does this allow you to experiment with different sounds and beats, but say you find a pattern you like for a beat – you can now save that pattern and use it with different drum sounds and you could wind up with a completely different beat.
Another powerful aspect of MIDI is velocity. Remember in physics class when you learned velocity was basically the speed at which an object moves? Well in this case that object is your finger. The faster/harder you hit a key, the more velocity is recorded into MIDI, and this means – you guessed it – a louder sound. This is really important for giving your beats that “live” feeling – most of the time a drum pattern recorded into MIDI will sound flat or boring. Switch it up by testing different velocities. Slam down for those loud kicks and use a gentle touch for the high hats.
